One Moment
Video artist Maggie Liao uses images to explore the self that exists outside of memories. In a photograph of the “me” that once existed, there reappear memories of what happened in a certain place. Throughout its 72 years of existence, the amusement park has always been changing in appearance. In photos we can see that some of the rides have not changed in terms of their original design, but their outward appearances have altered. Some have already been torn down. Photographs cannot achieve a rebirth of the past; all that remains is the captured image of a moment in time. In a world in motion, such a photo presents its referred subject (the subject that was photographed) in a static state. The artist invites visitors to provide a photograph from the past taken at the amusement park, and return to the spot where it was taken. With a digital camera, she will recapture the image described by the referred subject. Through this rite of photography, the reproduced image serves as an emotive memory of one moment that can never return.
